March 31, 2007. 360 the new RPG machine? You bet.
So you say the 360 is no Japanese RPG giant crab killer like the PS3. But we'll look at the facts and you can decide for yourself.
The first fact is that the PS3 is expensive. And we don't mean it's expensive to buy, which everybody already knows that. We mean it's expensive to develop. Sony wants all developers to use blu-ray so they can make some phat cash. But this puts a financial burden on developers, more so for Japanese RPG developers who aren't Square-Enix and don't have deep pockets.
Magna Carta 2 slated for 360 is a good example. The game has very Japanese RPG graphics (they suck), but that didn't stop it from selling to the RPG community.Another big name game that isn't a graphic masterpiece is Blue Dragon. Already a 360 exclusive that we'll review next week. Don't let the cutscene on the right fool you, Blue Dragon is ugly in comparison to even Final Fantasy XII on the PS2. But it's as Japanese as you can get. They even got the Japanese RPG standard cute animal and sexy blond babe.
The 360 is also much much easier to develop for than the PS3. This is important for RPG programmers because RPG games don't really require complex algorithms or specialized processors like the PS3. So why spend time learning them? This is one reason a few RPG companies are already developing 360 games. Microsoft makes it easy to program on the 360.
The last reason, has nothing to do with the 360. It has to do with the Nintendo. Go to The Magic Box and you'll see that all the anime based games are headed for Nintendo, either the Wii or DS. Those are the exact games not going to the PS3. You say how does this make the 360 an RPG machine? But face it, the Wii is wimpy. So gamers have a choice, the 360 or PS3 if they want next-gen graphics. And RPG makers have a choice, 360 or PS3 for RPGs if they don't want to work with Nintendo. Which is why the 360 is getting Eternal Sonata.
So in conclusion, the 360 has a bright RPG future unlike the Xbox. It's easy to program, doesn't require a financial investment on new technology like blu-ray, and has a solid number of gamers that already own it .
