April 14 , 2007. Final Fantasy Coming to 360? So What?
There's a great deal of noise and rumor going around the web that Playstation's heavy hitter, Final Fantasy, might be headed to the Xbox 360. But this is no rumor. It actually may be true. A Sony executive has stated that the exclusiveness of the Final Fantasy series is under discussion. This could mean that Square Enix wants to expand their Final Fantasy franchise to the 360. Square Enix is already releasing Silpheed for the 360.
But you're asking so what? Sony execs aren't known for honesty. Just ask Crazy Ken. And we agree. But think about it. The PS3 has proven to be a financial flop, being outsold by just about everything other than the Nuon. And that trend looks like it's going to continue for as long as the PS3 is more expensive than the other consoles, which is probably forever since the PS3 has bluray and a cell processor. Great thinking Ken.
But why should the 360 get Final Fantasy instead of the Wii? Well, the Wii will get a Final Fantasy. Probably the Crystal Chronicles series which was first started on the Gamecube. But Final Fantasy is known for its graphics and artwork. And certainly when it comes to those two things, the PS3 and 360 are on par as the best choices. The 360 might be better since it has a huge install base of 10 million gamers and a lack of RPGs. Although that might change. Read our RPG blog for why.
But should you care? The answer is probably not. Sadly, Final Fantasy has become stale. Save the world? Yep. Hot cast of babes, girly men, and talking animals? Probably. Final Fantasy remains a huge buffet of CGI cutscenes and bad writing. Sadly, what the Japanese are known for, repetition bordering on obsession, has always been a trademark of Final Fantasy. Expect another great story, but the details are repeats of all Final Fantasy games. You can time your watch to the melodrama and teenage angst. So we say no more to Final Fantasy. Sure it would sell volumes on the 360, but after all is said and done, you'll complain and wonder why you brought it and why it wasn't as good as Final Fantasy VII or whatever you were playing 10 years ago. |
