History Channel: Battle for the Pacific covers the war in the Pacific, mission by mission. Each mission has an introductory clip discussing the historical importance of the battle you are about to engage. Sounds about right for a WII FPS to us. Luckily, the old stories and melodrama are dropped for more action.
You don't really play anybody special. You're just a soldier, and your job is to win the war by doing whatever your commander wants. You'll fight through some very tough battles including Guadalcanal and Iwo Jima. Unfortunately, this is where reality ends and this game begins. Because the gameplay elements in this game are horrible from the controls, to the AI, to the extremely scripted events.
Let's start with the AI. There is none. The soldiers appear where you expect them and shoot at you until they die. If you are injured, you can use your men, who are invincible and incompetent, but they'll kill the enemy eventually if you let them. The AI is so bad, that sometimes the soldiers get stuck and you have to move around to get them out of your way.
Then there's the gameplay. Your aim is off, and you cannot turn very quickly. It seems that this game was designed for the mouse, which is fine, if this was 1995 and the next-gen console was the PSX. But it's not, so why wasn't the aiming adjusted for the 360? We don't know. You do get to use different weapons, but they all kind of suck. There's nothing here that has been improved since the original Medal of Honor series.
The graphics are good, but the textures are little faded in the bunkers. However, the jungle feels lush and the explosions look great. The sound and combat fit the game perfectly, and the chatter isn't as annoying as in other FPS games. However, the awful gameplay detracts from the 360 experience.
There's an online mode with deathmatch and the other required match types, and the game is kind of short at six hours depending on your gaming style. We're afraid this game is better on the PC, but even on the PC, the AI is horrible, so we can't recommend that version either.
