It's time for a another well produced gripping World War II first person shooter. They make these like BMWs off the assembly line. Great, but kinda stale after so many years of not changing the formula. And that's what's exactly right and wrong about this game. It's formulaic. Or as Fergi would say, It's formalicious.
Once again, you live the lives of a few soldiers in their greatest moment as they give you a teary eyed narrative of what they did during the war. One has to wonder after all these types of stories, we never get to play the Nazis or Japanese side? Would have been more interesting than this. Although the point is you get to fight in different weather. But don't expect anything notable from the plot.
You start out with the training mission where they teach you the basics. From there, you're thrown in story after story until the big final push. Along the way, you'll get to to drive a few vehicles, do some rail shooting, and do some stealthing where you have to take out the enemy by hitting them on the head with your gun. Does this sound familiar to you? To top it all off, the enemy AI respawns at the exact points you would expect them to respawn. Like before you enter a building that you must clear to continue the mission.
The controls are fine, although if you've played this series before, it's a little different from the others. But it'll only take you a minute to adjust to the slight changes. There's still no head tilting for sniping like in the newer FPS games. The AI is acceptable, but nothing special. You'll be more frustrated in the endless respawning soldiers in certain areas and boring trigger events.
This is a well produced game. The graphics are exceptional, considering there's so many versions out there. The sound is first rate. These have always been the strong point of this series, and they continue on the 360. Overall, it's just a slick production. In terms of replayability, this game is short at about 10 hours. But it's got all the coop and multiplayer modes we expect from a FPS. 24 people can play online, which is a good number that makes the game fun and very crowded at times. The online modes are pretty standard with nothing really standing out.
Now it's tough to grade this game. Sure it's pretty much been done before, but when you're playing it, you realize it's a good game that's pretty exciting. Although it gives you that deja vu feeling. That is why we say this game is formalicious. So if you don't mind getting that deja vu feeling and the realization that they really didn't put much effort into making this any better than previous versions, then this is a solid 360 title. And it is very popular for multiplayer so you'll have fun with that at least, which is what saved the replay value of this title.
