Fear Files Xbox 360 ReviewYes, it's an expansion set for FEAR, but you do not need the original to play this game. The expansion set covers two campaigns, Extraction Point and Perseus Mandate. Extraction Point is basically you trying to escape to an extraction point while being hunted and ambushed along the way. Perseus Mandate has you chasing genetic engineered mercenaries who are after the DNA template that made them.

But the main point of FEAR is the atmosphere, which is darkFEAR 360 with screaming in the background at times, and complete silence at other times. The atmosphere creates a very tense feeling in both campaigns as you see creatures scurrying across the screen or hear sounds of a firefight as you run through a level. You have the bullet time ability seen in the Matrix to assist you. There's plenty of standard modern weaponry for you to use.

FEAR FilesThe graphics are average for a 360 FPS. Since it's a horror FPS, the you spend a great deal of time in tight dark areas. The textures are also very average. Nothing in FEAR stands out, even the ghostly creatures you come into contact with lack interest. The sound fits the horror atmosphere, but it doesn't really stand out. The AI is superb and will cover, run, and try to outflank you if you let it.

FEAR files includes new multiplayer maps, new weapons, and enemies. However, the original FEAR was released in 2005 so there's not a great deal of people still playing this game online, even if the expansion pack is new. But it's a good single player game thanks to a very strong AI and a solid atmosphere.
