Hellboy is a demonic creature raised by humans who fights evil. In this game, he has to go back in time and stop a plot that could destroy the world. Why? We don't really know. It's more of an excuse to get Hellboy to beat up different creatures from different time periods than anything else. And how does he beat them up? With his giant hand and trusty gun. But mostly by physically smacking everybody around with the one button combo.

Hellboy has a gun that takes different ammo. It's good against enemies if you use the automatic aiming. Besides that, he has a few special moves and when he beats up an enemy, they drop glowing orbs that heal and power up Hellboy. If all of this sounds kinda generic, it is. But unlike other action games, Hellboy never gets new abilities. So you're stuck with the same set of moves and attacks. Hellboy is strong, but he's real slow so some of his combos leave him open and can get you in trouble if you're surrounded.

Graphically, Hellboy looks good in closeups and cutscenes with nice textures, but when actually fighting, it gets ugly. The detail that was in the closeups gets lost and you're left with late PS2 graphics. It's almost as if the closeups were movies, but they were actually made with the ingame engine. The sound effects and voice acting are good and the soundtrack is from the movie with a gothic vibe.

There's two player coop and split screen, which is probably as much as we an expect from a movie beatemup. It's a short game around 6 to 8 hours. We don't recommend it even for Hellboy fans. All they really get is to see some of Hellboy's main enemies, but they'll have to fight a thousand generic demons with the same attacks. It's real boring bargain bin stuff thanks to slow repetitive fighting and hordes of enemies, a formula that's sure not to please.
