Ahoy mates! We be pirates. Our job is to steal treasure, I mean borrow treasure and never give it back. Except we don't even care about treasure cause we got to save the world by stealing the heart of a half-man squid pirate. If you hadn't seen the movies, you'd probably be laughing right now. Yet, that's the basic plot. Sure, they add in new scenes cause you know, they got to stretch this short game out so you won't complain about the length.
But you'll complain about alot of other things. The game follows the movies real nice. You'll go through the major movie plot and everything is as you would expect. The characters interact well, even if the voice acting doesn't feature the original cast. And like all these movie-type action games, expect pretty good cutscenes between action sequences. Pirates even throws in enough humor and excitement to keep you interested in the next cutscene, especially if you haven't seen the 3rd movie. Although who are we kidding? Anyone who buys this game has seen the 3rd movie.
Now the ugly appears. The game is real real easy. It's like one of those early beatem-ups from 1987 such as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles the Arcade Game. There's an attack button. Keep pressing it and you'll eventually win. The game lets you switch characters, but it's not like any of them are that different when fighting. Press the attack button and that's it. They also let you use guns, but they aim horribly so don't bother. To break up the monotony, you got to uncover clues and run errands that have you roaming the land over and over.
The graphics are kinda a letdown. I guess it's because this game is multi-platform, but the characters don't look very good. The details are missing from everything, except in some of the prerendered scenery. The animation however, matches the real characters quite well. Sound is very good and matches the movie well.
This game has no replay value. There's the required achievements and horrible mini-game, but neither really do anything to improve the longevity of the game except for people who care about those things. Pirates does a horrible job of providing a movie-game experience by taking the pirate freedom out of the game and giving you one of those horrible search and find, single button pressing beatem-up.
