Let's start this review by saying there aren't as many characters as we would like. Around 16 from the Sonic games, Alex Kidd, Jet Grind Radio, Space Channel 5, Samba, Nights, Golden Axe, and Super Monkey Ball. Now where are the shooting games, Virtua Fighters, and RPG characters? Maybe in the sequel that will probably get released to cash in on some easy money?
But what you do get are 14 different levels featuring scenes from the games we just mentioned above. Some of the levels are very interactive and feature gameplay from the actual games combined with tennis! For example, if you play the Sonic level, you'll have to collect rings while playing tennis. Or you can just play a regular tennis game on that level. The regular tennis game is the same as any other tennis game since the original tennis on the NES.
However, each character does have one special ablility that can be activated with time. For example, Sonic does a Super Sonic attack that causes the tennis ball to bounce all over the court. These abilities aren't really crucial, but distract the opponent or provide a bit of relief from the monotonous oldschool tennis gameplay.
The graphics are average. This is a PS2 game released on the next-gen consoles. The colors are very bright and the environment matches the stages of the old school games. That does mean that there's not a whole lot of details in anything. The music is the best part of the games. They are modified tunes from the old school games. It's very cool to play a Sonic or Samba stage and hear the music in the background.
The game has plenty of online modes and a TV mode that lets you watch others play. There's also an online tournament mode. The one word we would use to describe this game is arcadey. That's because it would be great fun in an arcade, but the novelty of playing at home wears off quickly, even with all the online modes because nobody is playing online.
