Supreme Commander lets you control very large armies in a real-time land and see based strategy game. The game features three factions which include the humans, the very religious aliens called Aeons, and the Cybran cyborg nation. Just like in Starcraft, each faction is very distinctive, although all factions have the basic units like fighters, naval ships, and tanks. The sheer number of units allows a game to be played offensively or defensively.
The Earth units rely on guns and missiles while the Cybran concentrate on robots and giant walkers. The Aeon have powerful sea units for land bombardment. All three factions have special units and mothership class vessels that deal extreme damage. There are three campaigns that have various missions you have to accomplish to see the cutscene and move on to the next mission. There are two resources, energy and mass. You have to construct power generators and harvest mass deposits. Both are minor annoyances.
The 360 controls allow a great deal of queuing so you can concentrate on the battles, which start small, but become huge after a few missions. There can be hundreds of units spread across several battles on a very large map. It can get overwhelming. If you're wondering if this game is too much for the 360 to handle, you would be correct. There's plenty of slowdowns, AI problems, and other glitches. It's real tough to get a game of this size on a console, even if it's got a great GPU.
The units look good on the 360, but they aren't as detailed or as nicely textured compared to the PC version. Although you spend a great deal of the game looking at a map far above the action so the details are lost most of the time. The maps can get very large and hectic, so the landscape severely lacks detail. The game does feature great particle effects. The music has a military score to it. Explosions and gunfire are emphasized over the soundtrack.
You can play the campaign or skirmish modes, or go online against four other players in several multiplayer modes. The sheer size of the game and number of units is great, but the 360 version has major problems in the bugs department and serious framerate issues. We can't recommend this game because of the serious bugs and slowdown on the larger maps than dominate the game. However, it is a good rental.
