Activision, who made the first great Transformers game for the PS2, releases this game base on the movie. I guess they had to follow one of those awful contracts which forces them into releasing games before the movie comes out and without any quality they would put into their other past efforts, such as their Transformers for the PS2.
So the Autobots and Decepticons are at it again. This time, they're fighting over the All Spark, which we guess is the movie version of the Matrix. And of course, that thing ends up on Earth and they end up fighting all over the city. And this is where things go wrong. Right when the game starts, because all you do for the entire game is run around the city combo-ing your way through the game, which surprise surprise, is filled with grunts and a few bosses.
The city has areas where you have to stay within to fight like some sort of ring. And if you get knocked out of these areas, there's a time limit to get back in. Would be easy if the opponents didn't chase after you and beat you senseless while you're outside the ring. And the combos are pretty simple one-button stuff you would see in Japanese games like Dynasty Warriors. They got the throw button too. And yes, you can transform and attack using your weapons.
But those weapons only work on the environment because they enemies have shields which reflect all firepower. Luckily, you can just pick up something big and hurl it at them for maximum damage. But the best way to fight them is to punch them to death. There's a pattern of punch and run and hurl that you'll repeat for the entire game. It's real repetitive. The AI is pretty good. It will try to combo you, use special abilities, and chase after you if you run. But it doesn't block very well.
Transformers the game does look great. The city is well detailed and you can do anything you can in real life like knocking down buildings and throwing around cars. And everything looks well textured with great explosions. The best part is definitely the robots, which have alot of details in robot and vehicle forms. There really is a sense of size about these giant robots that are sorely lacking in other giant robot games. The music is minimalist which means it's mostly background music with the explosions and other sound effects overpowering the music.
There's no online mode so the developers let you play as both the Autobots and Decepticons. But the gameplay is the same. The only difference is the Decepticons are evil, so destroying the evironment feels more appropriate. The developers do give you one cool unlockable, which are the original skins of the old Transformers. You'll have to do all the side missions to unlock them. We really can't recommend this game unless you're a Transformers fan. The problem is the extremely shallow gameplay. Now if you like shallow gameplay and destroying cities, then this is your game. There's no Godzilla game for the Xbox yet so this is it.
